iRiver - Voice Recording Feature

Hello,

Based on several threads in the audio forum, the iRiver sounds like a great candidate to record voice and sound.
Trying to pick up a used 256mb player and the following are the main purpose to choose an iRiver player:

* Recorder voice
* And transfer voice (and sound) to the pc and use the sound file for video editing
* Record my professor's lecture to study. :)

What I am concerned is, up to how far in terms of feet can the iRiver pick up the sound from? 5 feet? 10 feet?
Thanks.
