Zoom H4n or Sony PCM-M10

Hi,

I'm debating which of the 2 recorders to buy for voiceovers on my short films. Does anyone have any experience or opinion or indeed any other suggestions? They are both the same price point. I know the differences between the two in terms of functions but which would offer the best quality for my purpose.

Many thanks

I'd go for the Sony - better built quality and better audio quality.

(I was comparing the PCM-D50, though).

Thank you for reply Martin.

I will be using a Rode NT3 mic, which is XLR, but I have both a Beachtek adaptor and an XLR to jack cable. I have used both of these independently in the past to connect to my camcorder. Considering this, do you still think the Sony would provide better results with one of the 2 connections rather than the Rode NT3 straight into the Zoom H4n?

Many thanks

I also have the Rode NT3 but I am using the Juicedlink active adapter (not the Beachtek). The results are excellent and better than straight into the H4n (which I also tried when I still had the H4n).

Wow Martin, you're at the Schoeps spot.

Back to the recorder, I got a Sony M10 with Sound Devices MixPre (line out to line in). This set works so well with Schopes microphones. Sound Devices 7XX is certainly better, but this set is my back-up to my 722, and addtional tracks when needed.

if size and price is important the new zoom h1 might be an option, less options as the zoom h4 but because of it's small size maybe an advantage. I didn't find it on the manufacturer's site back but found it on a Dutch reseller site: Zoom H1
