Sony Z7U with AT4053b
 

Hi,

From all the posts I read so far, I gather that AT4053b is an all round indoor/outdoor mic. I will be using it with a Sony Z7U with a boom for indoor drama or interviews. I plan to add a Rode NTG-3 and a Zoom H4N later to my audio gears, but for now, I need a resonable good mic for indoor recording and may be some outdoor work. My work will be mainly be event video and experimental short films.

Does anyone sees any mismatch with these two?

The 4053b will work just fine with your camera. I own two 4053's and I love them. The only thing you should keep in mind is if you're going to shoot outdoors, you're going to need wind protection. I have plans on buying this Rycote for mine, but I'm still not 100% if it's the correct fit:

I'm almost certain that one will fit. Shooting outdoors without one of these is a bad idea.

You're on the right track, Azadul, however, that Rycote softie is far too large for the 4053b. The softie on your wishlist is 9.44" in length. Don't get that one if you're getting the 4053b! Get the Rycote I linked in my post.

It's very important that the softie fits on the microphone properly. The softie just needs to cover the grill of the microphone. The rest of the body of the mic needs to be exposed so you can slip it into the shockmount.

Perhaps a baby ball gag would be the ticket?

That mic is fine but I chose the AT875R for my S270 as it matched the Z7 mic I had.

I now have an HPX301 but use the AT875R on the camera and as a boom mic and find it sounds good for int and ext.

Here are a couple of clips of it being used straight into the camera on a drama shoot, I also use it with the rode hand grip and softie as it offers better value than the rycote ones.

Those are great examples. During the shoot, did your soundman keep pointing the shotgun to the face of the talents or keep it pointed at a general location in the middle? I would be fine capturing audio like this for the kind of films that I have in mind.I plan to record the RT using H4N separately and then lay the dialogues on top of it and then add background music on post.

Does any of you use a wireless transmitter with your boompole (if you are recording directly to the camera)? That would allow the soundman the flexibility to move with the talent rather than worry about the cabels.

Hi Azad the boom was about two feet from the actors and the boom op just panned it slightly to put each speaker on-mic, you can see it dip into shot on the latter part of the exterior sequence.

It was a cable set-up straight into the camera to keep the quality up although I now also have a sennheiser phantom power plug in transmitter so that I can use the boom totally wireless.

I also use the rode pistol grips and softies and they are the PG2 and the WS/6.

The WS/6 on the camera has been cut down but the one on the boom is full length ( see below)

I find the AT875r to be a superb all round mic for dialogue and effects and very good value for money.
