Rode NTG2 - high pass filter problem

I used the NTG2 a while back and it was fairly breezy but even with a windshield had terrible sound. Having looked over the forums it would seem that the problem lies in the high pass filter switch. I'm now in the market for a shotgun mic and my question was does taping over the switch solve the problem?

I don't like the idea of using tape on a brand new mic to get it to work satisfactorily but I'm not sure i want to pay the extra for an NTG3. Im sure its much better but I'm using the shotgun for GV/b-roll audio, vox pops and perhaps the occasional piece to camera, and not sure for those reasons the additional outlay is worth it.

Thanks!

Which windshield did you use? If it's really breezy, anything less than a good-quality furry cover or better yet a zeppelin, may be insufficient to prevent wind noise.
Any opening in the mic can cause wind noise. I'd suggest you tape over the switch with a small piece of black gaffer's tape and test it out in real world conditions.

I had a 'dead cat' on it. Just doing vox pops.

I'll see what the other feedback is, if inconclusive i'll look to hire one and do some tests.

Thanks for the reply.

The dead cat isn't that great in wind. I would highly recommend a Rycote softie and a piece of black gaff tape on the switch and the XLR connector. YouTube - Reducing Wind Noise
