Pads go between an audio output and audio input and reduce the loudness of the signal.

Also called Attenuators. They come in a lot of flavors.
minus 10, minus 20, minus 30, minus 40, minus 50. some are adjustable from minus 10 to minus 30.

Yep. And to be complete, that -10 to -50 are in dB or decibels. -6dB roughly cuts the sound in half. -12dB cuts it by a quarter, etc. Sometimes they're used between devices that use different standards (like a -50dB pad to go from "line" output to a "mic" level input.) Other times they're used on mic outputs (maybe -20dB) when the sound level is very high, like at a rock concert or an auto race.

Hi folks,
On my last job I asked the DJ if I could connect to his tape out on his board. He had no problem so I use a RCA to 1/8" to a Sennheiser G2. Since the G2 can do either mic or line level input it worked great. The sound quality was excellent and the levels never varied so I had a perfect signal every time. I connected it to the XLR input on my Canon XH-A1 and monitored the levels manually.

Using record out or tape out should work fine.
