Cavision Windjamer - Anyone ever try one?

Hello,

Just wondering if anybody has any experience with one of these?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/628994-REG/Cavision_SWJ2196_SWJ219_Slide_On_Windjammer_with.html
It seems like an awfully cheap price and I'm tempted. I usually use a full blimp with furry when needed but I will be doing a shoot in July where I may need to have my shotgun on my camera and I'll need some kind of wind protection.

Thanks,
Garrett

I thought that "Windjammer" was a registered trade mark for Rycote?

You get what you pay for - unless a company really understands the science behind wind reduction you can get high frequency loss and a less effective design.

Even the original Rycote ones are pretty inexpensive; I would not go for a lesser make.

6" length, doesn't state the diameter. "Artificial Rabbits Fur"... or real Cat's fur from China . You could try it.. only 20 bucks.

I owned one for use on my Sennheiser ME66/K6.

It was certainly acceptable but what I found was when I had the opportunity to use a real Rycote, the Rycote seemed to fit better, stay on better and the "fur" was more predictable... I don't know HOW many times, I'd see JUST the edge of the fur creeping into frame in post that I didn't see in the viewfinder when the ME66 was on the camera as the wild sound pickup mic...

If you don't have the cash for a Rycote, buy it. It's better wind protection than nothing. Just realize it IS a sacrifice.

Only YOU can decide WHERE to make sacrifices for you and your clients...

Cripes, it's only twenty bucks. If it works EVEN ONCE, you've got your money's worth out of it.

You might also look at TheWindCutter.com, Professional Microphone Windscreens. They custom made a furry sized to fit over my cage and microphone mount from a photo and dimensions I gave them, for only about $50. It seems well made and definitely does its job.

One thing I'm curious about is whether it's okay to have a seam in the furry stitching which crosses right in front of the front of the shotgun mic. The obsessive in me says that they should have added another panel for the end so that the seam wouldn't be right between the capsule and the sound being captured, but then again doing so would have made for more seams overall.

I'd be curious to hear whether other top-rated shotgun furries have seams on the ends? Probably not a big deal, just something to wonder.
