Great - do you need it?
I'm a lover of DPA mics, but this one is not hugely popular, simply because users are in the 416 mindset. It's probably an excellent mic - but we don't know it's plus or minus points. DPA make many excellent mics, but until you find somebody with one, we don't know. Many moons ago I spent a lot of money on some 4001 mics for stereo recording, and really didn't like the sound. Many people rave over them, but they didn't suit me at all. B&H do 414s for half the price, so even adding the Rycote goodies, I suspect I personally would be happier with that because I know the sound well - and how the mic works on people and things! |

I'm trying to narrow down the options. In the Dan Brockett comparison (several years old) he posted audio files from several shotguns, including high-end brands like Sanken and Schoeps. To me, the one that sounded consistently best, both on axis and off, was the Neumann 81i.
