I'll have to get back to you on that....:)

Spring is here, but it still feels like Winter in the mid-Atlantic.

So you have actually got hold of one then? Looks like a very specialised microphone Ty. Do you have a specific use for it?

Hello Trevor,

As you may know, most of the long shotguns have been used for years on very big and very well acoustically-treated sound stages and on with nature videography. e.g. "The Lions on the plains of the Serengheti (roar) bask in the noon day sun, eyeing the nearby yellow-throated sandgrouse."

I'm far from the Serengheti and no space advertising itself as a "sound stage" anywhere near me is really controlled enough in it's raw state to not ring like a bell. I guess I'll just have to do my own nature recordings or drop in on a local soccer game with my Sound Devices 744T or see what happens in a properly damped studio (mine or someone else's).

It's trying to be Spring here and we have plenty of birds. Sports fields are not too far away Can I keep the distant roar of the beltway out? On a good today with the wind blowing from a favorable direction, yes. Here's the Audio Technica BP4025 sucking up stereo ambience in my back yard. Freesound.org - "Ambi08.wav" by Ty Ford

What'll it do in the studio? I have no idea, yet.:) Does that help?

Regards,

Ty Ford

Thanks Ty. It was interesting listening to the linked sound file, and waiting for it to get to those segments of higher amplitude, and wondering what they would be.

Most of the old school long shotguns like this had their uses 30 years ago but I think with modern digital post prod techniques and plug ins for filtering etc a well placed 416 / NTG3 sized mic is more practical these days.

Even on sport OB productions we tend to favour the 416 these days and I have just sold my ex BBC MKH816 P48 as it is just too big and heavy.

Actually, the long guns were mostly used with sports broadcasting.

Getting the sound of a golf club hitting the ball, or a cricket bat, baseball bat, etc.

They were often "locked off" at the side of the pitch.

A long gun is very difficult to use on a fishpole as the smallest movement changes the high frequency characteristics.

I agree - which was why Sennheiser discontinued the 816 very many years ago.

Though with modern low-noise circuits they have recently introduced the new 8070.

FWIW, I used to have a 815T, and didn't use it much, I replaced it with a lighter/shorter AT4071.
I rarely use that either. As I recall, the last time I saw it (out of the case) was a couple years ago.
