Compare AT-875 vs. AT-897
 

I'm pondering the choice of a short shotgun for indoor dialog & newsgathering in acoustically random (uncontrolled) spaces. Would anyone care to compare & contrast the AT-875 with the AT-897?

Or is there a significantly better choice for this application, at roughly the same price point (approx $200 USD)?

AT-897 for outdoors.

Other options (but may not fit the price point) Rode NTG3, There have been some new models of short shotgun mics released recently by Sony, Shure, and Sennheiser that may fit the price point.

I have not used either one Greg. But based entirely on the specs:
- AT-875R would be better for dialog type material. ( High output; 90-20kHz.; less weight; PP only;)
- AT-897 would be better for music and higher SPL sources. (High SPL; 20-20kHz.; PP or Batt.)
Unfortunately the specs don't tell us everything on how it sounds in the real world.
You should try them out. How about a used 415T/416T/P or a AT4073? Though finding one at that price would be tough.
