Zoom H1 3 questions
 

Hi, I'd like to buy a Zoom H1 and I'd like to know:
1) Can I attach the Zoom H1 to my handycam? Have I plug it on t Hot Shoe (slot of light)? Will I need to buy an accessory to do it?
2) on Zoom H1 I see only an Audio out for headphone but I don't see the Audio out line. Is there?
3) Does Zoom H1 record the quality of sound better than the incorporate microphone of a very good handycam? Ineed to know the quality of sound compared to a incorporated mic.

- Don't know, one can probably buy a 1/4" > 1/4" shoe adapter or make something. However a camera mounted mic is about the worst place. Camera noise and far away from sound source. See #3.

- Just headphone out. Sescom and others make an interfaces, where it's possible to monitor via HPs and send a mic level signal to the cam

3) Does Zoom H1 record the quality of sound better than the incorporate microphone of a very good handycam? I need to know the quality of sound compared to a incorporated mic.
- Neither is much good for anything other than ambient (nat) sound. A separate lavaliere or boom mic is needed for any decent sounding dialog.
However if you can get the mic in 'real close' to the person speaking, it may be usable.. depending on your expectations

yes you can attach the H1 onto just about any mount. Yes the recorders on board miss are much better than almost any DSLR, I would need to know the handy cam you have in order to say if its better or worse.

No line out, however it does have a line in,so you can plug a lav mic or a wireless mic into it and record very nice audio. You can also mount the H1 on a small tripod, or at the end of a small boom pole to get closer to the subject. Ive mounted it at the end of a c stand arm and used it that way as well.

Yep it has a standard photographic 1/4"x20 socket in the back so you can easily attach it to a hotshoe or any sort of clamp or mini tripod. The threads are plastic not metal so be careful but you should be OK. I have 4 of the H1's.

You would use a nut similar to these Kaavie dual nuts to attach it to a hotshoe:

or you could use a small ball and socket head with the appropriate hotshoe fixing on its base.

The audio quality is surprisingly decent even on - shock horror - auto, which you may want to use in some unpredictable situations.

They are also a decent substitute for radio if you don't have the time or money or inclination to go that route and if simultaneous monitoring is not essential. A lav running into an H1 in a pocket works well.
