miniDV copies
 

Hi,

I'm looking into a device for miniDV copies. What do most of you use ?

I've been using two camcorders via a Firewire link, but I'm not happy about the reliability of the process and the additional tape head wear and tear of two camcorders. I would prefer a device that could read an
entire tape to a hard drive, create a "tape image" (like a disk image), write to
a miniDV tape and verify the data. A read verify would also be cool.

Anything that operates at faster than DV25 rate ?
 

Are there any devices that can read or write at faster rates ? I'd love
to be able to reduce capture time with a 2x device.

Is anyone using a computer DAT drive, such as these DAT drives from HP ?

I usually use the "Print to Tape" feature in my NLE (Vegas).

The only way I'm aware of for reducing capture time is to use a drive device like the Nnovia or similar. I use the Nnovia, little cheaper than the Firestore, not as sexy but a bit more functional, IMO. I've tried them all...and bought two nnovia.

Can the nnovia be used to capture from a DVCAM tape--rather than live recording from a cam--, functioning like a VTR? I am looking for an alternative to DVCAM decks.

The A2D model can be, yes. Or, you can just use the Firewire out on your DVCAM deck/cam.

Just to clarify: I can connect the nnovia standard model (not A2D) to my DVCAM camera using firewire, and record a pre-recorded tape from the cam to the nnovia?
If yes, this is a practical alternative to a DSR-11/25/etc deck; somewhat less expensive, not to mention the direct-to-disk recording.

Yes, you can connect the Nnovia directly to your camera for transfers. It's basically capture software built onto a portable disk unit.
I've used the A2D model for straight playback to a television, and have used the standard as playback via a Canopus ADVC300 to a television on more than one occasion.
