giant squid recommendatn n advice

Hi All,

I'm thinking of using the giant squid iriver setup to reocrd audio for the actors, the main reason being that the actors will be less conscious and more mobile when there is no soundman following them around and attracting unwanted attention.

1
will the giant squid be able to work as a body worn lavalier mic? I have no experience working with lavaliers and i'm wondering if the giant squid will be particularly susceptible to clothing noise or is this issue more a matter of correct placement of the mics.

2
if the giant squid suits my purposes, EXACTLY which model would you recommend? Omnidirectional or Cardiod and Stereo or Mono?

3
can the iriver be substituted with any mp3 player that has a record function and line-in connection?

please be patient if my questions expose my inexperience.
And thanks in advance!

Jason, there was an iRiver thread started here:

It's where I did most of my research before purchasing 2 iRivers and 2 lav mics.

Somebody has forwarned me not to use the newer "T" series of iRivers for mic input. There are a lot of 700, 800 series in use with lav mics but they may be getting harder to find.

Giant Squid makes a lav mic specifically for the iRiver (It keeps the recorder in mono mode)

It's called, "Iriver Omni Mono Microphone". (you really don't need stereo for voice input IMO). Although I haven't tried mine yet other folks here swear by them.

I've also heard that somebody was using the Olympus Voice recorders for this type of thing but have no experience with them.
