gs400 & boom?
 

Im wondering if i could have a gs400 with one of these

an XLR pro adapter.

With a rode video mic as a boom on say a 5 metre cable.
WIll it be balanced , and will it work?

i know the rode plugs in mini but i want a balanced sound input, which is why i may by the xlr adapter.

DO i need phantom power, cause i cant really afford it.

Sure you can use the mixer/adapter with the GS400. However, with the RODE Videomic, you don't need it since you can plug the VM directly into the GS400, even with a 5 meter cable. Adding the mixer/adapter will not make your audio balanced.

If you want balanced audio, you need to start with a mic that has balanced output. Even so, the audio into the GS400 is unbalanced. So, you will need a mixer/adapter or an XLR to 3.5mm miniphone plug to convert the balanced cable into unbalanced for the cam.

With the VM, you don't need phantom power.

The Rode Videomic doesn't accept phantom power so you don't need it cause you can't use it anyway.

Rode makes an adapter for the miniplug output to a camera's XLR input. But XLR is not automatically balanced and the adapter does NOT convert it into a balanced system. To do that you'd need an unblanced-to-balanced transformer at the microphone end and something like an Beachtek at the camera end. Yes, you can use a simple adapter to plug an unbalanced feed into a balanced input but when you do, it unblances the entire system and you lose any advantages balanced would have given you. If you want to have the advantages of running balanced from the boom to the camera, you simply must go a few steps beyond a simple adapter and use a transformer at the boom and a Beach or similar at the mic. Anything short of that will still work but is a waste of money since you're not going to gain anything over a simple, unbalanced extension cable for the mic.

Whats the next step up from the videomic thats balanced. Would it be the At897?

If i used that and a non powered beechworth adapter would it be a blanced signal?
