Tinny Sound - Wanted!
 

Hey hey all. I'm attempting a new short with a late '60s-early '70s type feel to it, but the audio I record with my external mic is far too clean. I've been messing around with Audacity and Soundforge, but I can't seem to create an appropriately tinny sound to make the dialogue decipherable but still sound rather low quality.

If anyone can suggest a program or filter that might achieve this effect, I'd be grateful. Thanks a lot =D

A band pass filter will make your audio sound Lo-Fi™

Basically roll off the low end (EQ or Low pass filter) and roll off the high end (EQ or high pass filer) - keep the slopes high (24db per octave not 6db) and you should be good.

Don't forget, Audacity supports VST plug-ins and there are many good plug-ins available for free. One of those might work well for your intentions.

That second plugin you mentioned, Lee, turned out to be perfect. Gave me exactly the sound I wanted.

Yeah, I have that one too. But I don't associate it with classic film sound. Glad it worked out for you.
