Shotgun Shorter Than 6"?

I'm looking for a short shotgun mic, shorter than 6", either phantom or self powered, to mount on a Canon HV10. What do you recommend for < $300?

Douglas Spotted Eagle December 19th, 2006 06:25 PM

I'm unaware of anything of any quality that is shorter than 6". The AT55 from Audio Technica is less than 6", less than 300.00, and less than anything I'd consider useful.
You can get several cardiods in a small diaphragm for less than 300.00 and less than 6", however.
Can you describe the use of the cam/mic to better make suggestions?

It's mostly for run and gun one man shoots, so having some kind of hiss free, good quality ambient sound is essential.

Coupla things to consider;
Shotguns aren't much good in *most* indoor situations.
Shotguns ignore most sound from sides when they can. They don't "reach out" as the "zoom" switch on some mics might indicate.
A small diaphragm cardiod would likely be your best bet in the majority of situations. It'll ignore what's behind it, but pick up audio in front and to a limited extent, to the sides of it. You'll find it easier to work with in the average run n' gun situation, especially on a small body cam like the HV10.

Sounds good. I was looking at the AT Pro37. But, the specs don't look too good, espcially the Open Circuit Sensitivity of -42dB.

How about the AT3031, AT4041, SE-Electronics SE1A or even the Behringer B-5?

Am I missing something? Where would you connect a mic on an HV10? I bought one to ue for viewing and capturing my XLH1 footage, but didn't see any mic connection,or head phone jack for that matter.

P.S. You'll need some kind of stabilizer for that tiny camera.

There isn't a mic jack. I hacked one by replacing the internal mic with a jack and wiring it directly to the analog-digital converter, bypassing the mic preamp.

Sankem make a nice short shotgun unit, with a very decent shockmout to go with it..

We want pix!!!!! How's it work? How do you control volume? What level input does it need?

It's really nothing too fancy. I have a Sound Devices MM-1 feeding a line level signal into a 1/8" jack. The nice thing about the MM-1 is the low noise floor and the fact that it can monitor headphones.

But, the mod isn't finished yet as I still need to enable manual gain control and workout some internal wiring issues.

Do you mean Sanken? The Sanken CS3e is a very good short shotgun. It's a lot more than $300.00 I have a review of it on my website in the On Line Archive.

I think I'm just going to go with the Rode Stereo VideoMic. That's a decent mic, isn't?

Ty Ford December 22nd, 2006 09:26 PM

Yes, decent, but it's not a shotgun. That's what you originally said you wanted, right?
