Shockmount needed for indoor recording?
 

I have an ME66 for outdoor recording attached to a K-tek boom pole via a AT8415 shockmount , but for indoor door I have a heavier Rode NT3. Can I simply attach that to a mic boom stand, or is it advisable for that to be shockmounted too? It doesn't seem ideal to stick at the end of a boom pole because of its weight.

Greg, one of my indoor mics is an NT3.

I've ended up using Rode's own suspension mount for it. It works pretty well for a low-priced shockmount, and I've found it holds the heavier weight of the NT3 better than more expensive brands (which are typically designed to be lighter).

It'll be absolutely fine on a stand with a regular clip as long as no one bumps into the stand, or unless there are some kind of vibrations coming up through the floor.

A shockmount, when used on a stand, is really not much more than an insurance measure against the possibility that the above kinds of things might happen unpredictably while recording. If you're in a situation where you can reasonably predict that the floor won't vibrate or that no one will bump your stand, then you can do just fine without a shockmount.

Shockmounts are absolutely necessary, of course, when the mic is mounted to a moving object--such as a camera or a boom pole. These situations are probably somewhat rare with an NT3.

Just to second Tom's recommendation though: I own an sm3 too, and agree that it works quite well with the extra weight of the NT3. I typically only use it with my NTG-1 on the camera or a boom, but there are those rare occasions...

Good advice from the previous posters. I'll just add that the NT3 and the AT8415 shockmount work great together.

Tom, Jarrod and Michael, thanks very much for the replies - sounds like the equipment that I already have will be fine.

It a pinch, you could shave a few ounces off the weight of an NT3 by removing the outer metal shell. Just the same action as when you replace the battery, a few twists.
