recording sound onto jvd hd100

Does anybody recommend recording sound onto the hdv tape or should I record onto DAT or minidisc? Is there a big difference in sound quality?

the sound compressed into the HDV format is less than perfect. Nevertheless, it works OK for the spoken word and sounds of ordinary volume. High dynamic range recordings, however, really suffer from the artifacts produced when they are compressed. For this, things like music and vocals, should be recorded in a non-compressed or lossless format like wav.

Bill's right (Hey, Bill) about the HDV format. There's been some discussion about the sound on HDV actually being a shade worse than standard DV, although my experience has been that they are pretty much the same - i.e. ok, but not great. It's not just the format, of course, but the entire audio circuitry on the little HDV cameras is only so-so.

To make the decision, it all depends on what kind of sound you are thinking about. If it's just vocals for an interview, then HDV would probably be fine. If you're looking at dramatic work, or ambient natural sounds, or musical instruments, then you will probably notice the difference between on-camera and off-camera recordings.
