Sennheiser G2 Wireless System

Everyone is speaking so highly of the Sennheiser G2 wireless system, I've started looking into it. It's a suprisingly inexpensive system! I do have one question however. What's the difference between the ME2 and the ME4 lav mics. I assume the quality, but which is which?

Thanks!

The stock ME2 usually supplied with Senn. G2 is an omni directional.
The ME4 is a cardoid pattern, which, if you're unfamiliar with it, is somewhat directional.

While cardoid may be appealing (more directional = more goodness, right?), a cardoid lav is actually more of a special purpose mic.

For most body-worn microphones you want an omni, eg. ME2, because you don't want the sound level to drop off when the subject turns their head... or when the mic slips around and points the wrong direction, which they have a tendency to do if you're not careful when you rig it.

Other than directionality characteristics, they are the same mic.

There are comparison audio tests between the two mics somewhere (I forgot the url). Most people opt for Sanken Cos 11 or Countryman B6 (for the size).

The G2 is the cheapest "acceptable" wireless system. If you have the money, stop reading and just go for the lectrosonics or zaxcom.

Thanks Seth, exactly what I needed to know.

Jason, thanks also for your input. I'll look into that.

Don't forget the Sony UWP-C1

Just got mine recently and love it. Great range too.

If anyone can offer a comparison to the Sennheiser, I'd be interested.

Found the site

Listen to the demo of many different mics (me2, me4, Heil pr40, Countryman E6, Tram TR50, Octava MK012A ...etc) with and without the G2.

enjoy
