low contrast filter

some time ago i read that a low contrast filter could give a little more latitude by loosing light, is this true? is the gain of latitude any interesting given the loss of light? by stacking two low contrast filter i gain two times the latitude of the gained using only one filter? also is the given loss of light two times worse?
