Resolution Loss

does the Micro35 lose detail in the image?

i heard it may be the equivalent of over 200 hundred lines.

is this true?

anyone tested it?

James Hurd March 14th, 2005 03:43 PM

My last test showed a resolution of ~640 lines using a LOMO lens.

Hope this helps!

LOMO lens? i'm getting a head ache already.

living in Australia i have many hurdles to overcome to get those things. plus the ignorance factor is giving me anxiety.

i bought myself some canon FD lenses. are these alright?

James Hurd March 14th, 2005 03:53 PM

The Canon FD lenses will work just fine.

Aaron Shaw March 14th, 2005 07:45 PM

640 in the horizontal direction I presume? What about the vertical?

James Hurd March 16th, 2005 09:03 PM

Aaron,
Sorry about the delay in responding. I'm prepping for one last trip...

It looks like the vertical was around 600.

Thanks!

i thought PAL was 720x576
and
NTSC was 720x480
??

which one is the 600 and which is 640??

Ryan Hamblin March 16th, 2005 11:14 PM

I can attest to the sharpness of the FD lenses, they work really well with the setup. We used all primes and I recommend you do the same.

Hi Ryan,

Is that canon fd MF lenses? I'm looking around for those, since they are cheaper than nikon MF's (one of the few advantages of incompatibilty!), and I heard the best in the canon fd line are equal to the best in the nikon MF line. Also, they have some lenses that are faster than nikon's in certain focal lengths.
What was your experience with them? Did you use an follow focus with them?

Thanks!

Steven

The FD lenses work really well with the system.

Rob Lohman March 19th, 2005 06:27 AM

Frank: I believe they are talking about how many lines they can
read of a test chart. The digital resolution will always be the same.

Frank Vrionis March 19th, 2005 06:38 PM

Thanks Rob,

I’m aware of that. That’s why I said "equivalent".

Thing is James said 640 lines then said 600 lines.

I’m not sure what specifically he means by that.

PAL is 720x576 and NTSC is 720x480.

Obviously the resolution loss would most likely be from the 720 (horizontal?) and what about the 576 and 480??

Maheel Perera March 19th, 2005 08:09 PM

The DV/DVCAM format could deliver only 500 lines of resolution.

Frank Vrionis March 20th, 2005 06:02 PM

Maheel, I’ve no idea what that means. I’m a novice and need training wheels. Humour me.

Maheel Perera March 21st, 2005 09:15 AM

Frank,

Although PAL frame is regarded as 720X576 the horizontal resolution is limited by the format. VHS can resolve only 250 lines. and S Video resolves 400. For DV/DVCAM it is 500.
