2/3" Infa-Red lens options

Not sure if this is the right location on the site.

Has anyone ever rented a Infa-Red camera that is broadcast quality? I have a client that want to survey power lines and has asked for this option.

Around about four years ago, tube based passive near-IR light amplier appliances like Electrophysics Corp Astroscope (pretty much the only game in town) and the Pyser PNP-HG, would resolve almost up to SD broadcast quality at about 450 lines from about 50 - 60 line pairs per mm of display resolution on the tube screen..

There are now tubes which will resolve up to 72 line pairs per mm. The "apparent" resolution is affected by whether you aquire the full area of the round display screen as a vignetted image or extract a retangular image from the centre by zooming in closer and lose about 30% of the area and take the resolution hit.

Another form of true IR thermal imaging has evolved and is affordable to the point where fireservices are using them to look for hotspots.

My imagining is that your client may want full IR thermal imaging if he wants to pre-empt street poletop fires which may not be caused by visible flashovers but by a less apparent creeping breakdown of insulation which perhaps might not be as readily apparent to near IR light amplifying systems.

Near IR light amplifying tubes also have a finite service life about about 10,000 hours which may be considerably shortened if too many bright light sources pass through the image.

My info is about 4 years old so things will have changed

Have a search for Military and Law Enforcement Technologies. Their website is extensive and helpful. I understand they have rented appliances within Australia. This will not help you because of export permits etc., plus the likelyhood they will not want to rent outside of the country.

I don't know if you can rent the Astroscope within the US and attach it to a rented camera or rent the complete package.

Electrophysics Corp might direct to you rental vendors.

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the delay is responding on the road shooting long days.

Thank for the contacts. When I am back in my office next week this is high on my list. I will research rental houses that offer the products you suggest and see if this fits the clients needs.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
