1. What kind of magnet does one use?
2. Where does one buy such a a magnet?

Which size is best?

.315" dia. x .118" thk.

I hate to be so deliriously anal, but, is it better to err on the side of too big or too small? I'd say too big would be better, but it makes me wonder--have any horror stories emerged at all of magnets damaging circuits or tapes emerged? In that case, is it better to go small, to make the risk of damage less severe? Woah is me.

Smallest is best, but don't worry about the magnet being too strong. It's known that you need a really, really, really, really, really, really powerful magnetic field to erase tapes and the like. Carry on.

There's no possible way for anyone to know except those who have tried it on a particular camcorder. In theory, most/all companies use the magnet method in their cameras that allows us to exploit it like we are doing, but there have been reports that some camcorders simply don't do it. The only way is to buy a magnet and try it yourself.

It doesn't seem to work for me with an HC1. Did anybody get it to work with an HC1?

One thing that may give a sign as to if your camcorder will work with the magnet trick is when you flip your LCD monitor if your image flips automatically then it is likey that the magnet trick will work. There is usually (I assume) a "reed" swith inside that LCD frame that activates the flip.

Another source of magnets would be those annoying fridge magnets.

Do you have like Home Depot, Homebase stores where you are..

If so, head toward the cupboards/hinges section etc and seek out the magnetic hinges - buy a couple they are cheap.. break em open and try your luck..

Hi, some ask where to buy magnets, how big, where to place etc.

I went to Homebase here in london, asked for any magnets and he pointed me to the cupboards/hinges section.. the magnetic hinges.. they work.
I broke it up and got the magnet out.. 1cm by .5 cm taped it just above the lCD when opened.. presto.. ! right way up for and 35mm adaptor.
remember to try both sides of the magnet..
