Minimum frame dimensions for DV/HDV/HD?
 

Hiya...

I know this has been gone over time and again here, but I'm warry of sifting through the 10000's of posts just to find this out (and yes, I did search already...)

What are the minimum frame dimensions for the image projected on the GG for each res: DV, HDV, HD?

I thought it was something like 36mmx24mm but need to be certain.

To be a little more clear, what I'm getting at is what is the minimum diameter GG you could use and still satisfy the image dimensions for each of these formats?

I think the P+S Technik Mini35 frame off the groundglass is 21mm corner to corner (21mm diameter circular image). The HDV images Chris Hurd posted awhile back seemed sharp enough.

For combinations where the camcorder's own zoom lens is part of the path, I don't see that it is written in stone but obviously, the larger area off the groundglass available, the better the resolution has to be and should be aspired to.

Whatever format, my personal preference would be to go far as big a frame off the groundglass I could get, vignette or fall-off free, with any given SLR lens except where a visible change in image quality from one lens used to another would make for a continuity problem.

Of the lenses I have access to, the f1.8 85mm, 105mm and the f2.8 135mm seem to confer a bright image right across my setup. The shorter focal length lenses seem to tend more towards falloff to the edges and I tend to zoom in closer on the groundglass for these.
