Hi all. I'm new to the board and want to thank you all for such a great forum. I figured now would be a good time to post my first question. I just purchased the WD-58 wide angle lens for my GL-1. However, I'm having a terrible time trying to find the lens hood for it. The WD-58H comes with the hood, but I didn't realize this when buying mine. Canon does not sell the hood by itself anymore and all of the stores I have found that do, are out of stock. I'm wondering if anyone has any information on generic hoods that will work nicely for this lens. I found this question posted on this site back in 2002. Good man Steve. In my view the lens hood is the cheapest, lightest, easiest to fit and best accessory you can buy to improve the look of your footage ~ bar none. Of course the wider the field of view of your camera+lens combo, the more difficult it is to hood effectively, which is why (on scripted shoots) French flags are so popular.

I'm guessing you're shooting in 16:9, so you should have a 16:9 hood of course, otherwise you're losing hooding efficiency. But it's worth a look at the Cavision range - and yell at them to make a 16:9 version. It's about time they did.

I just purchased the WD-58 wide angle lens for my GL-1. . .well .. can't you return it? And buy from the same place a WD with a HOOD?

Your link to : http://www.cavision.com/lenshoods/AR8558.htm shows a hood that fixes onto the 58 thread. It is NOT the larger hood you need to fix to the FRONT of the WA adaptor, approx 80mm. So you would need a hood that fixes to the fromn of that adpator, this one, as far as I can tell, is only meant to go onto a 58mm front - yes?

The hood you've liked to is designed for the wide-angle end of a typical camcorder zoom, Steve, so is not suitable at all for your Canon. And it's circular so even less efficient than a 4:3 hood (though circular with 'petal' cutouts can be very efficient.

but I bet you can use a deeper one. That's because the GL1 has a pretty feeble wide-angle to start with, and adding a 0.7x to it doesn't take you W-I-D-E, only wide.
So this one may be more suitable:

It's a suck-it-and-see situation. I'd buy the deeper one on the understanding I could return it for the shallower (and less efficient) one if it vignetted my full DV frame.

thanks for all of the help. I inquired about the LH-100 so we'll see what they say. Sorry about the lack of knowledge on the subject :(. I'm actually a senior at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington D.C. and digital video is a relatively small part of our program. However, I really want to start getting involved more deeply in the subject. I'm conducting a series of interviews from designers from NYC and D.C. for my thesis and want to buy some extra add-ons for my camera. Not necessarily for the interviews, but for upcoming projects. Thanks for the advice again, and I'll let you know how things turn out.
