I just downloaded 4.6 broadcast, now available. It reads EX1 mpeg-4 native files. What a dream! There are 2 workflows for me now, depending how quickly I need to edit.

FASTEST WAY
1. Insert SxS card into Express slot.
2. Open Sony clip browser 1.1, open mpeg-4 files on card.
3. Drag them to Edius 4.6 bin.
4. Edit!

BEST WAY
1. Insert SxS card into Express slot.
2. Copy the card's entire BPAV folder to your hard drive. (This will take several minutes)
3. Open Sony clip browser 1.1, open mp4 files in downloaded folder
4. Drag them to Edius 4.6 bin
5. Edit!

No need to export to MXF anymore! Yipee! Even my old HP zd8000 edits everything in real time.
How cool is that?

You can open the tools menu in the Edius bin and open the Sony Browser software from within Edius Broadcast. (acts like a plugin).

I agree with you, it's fast and has just made my day!

Cheers Vaughan

I didn't know it acts as a plugin...thanks! It's even faster now!

I just downloaded a demo version of edius 4.5. Been playing with it and I REALLY like this. Faster renders, no wrangling color space like in vegas 8, real time preview, including transitions. I am so so tired of Vegas' stutter and start/stop previews. In its day vegas was pretty cool. It was a great little app for DV, but, since HD(V), it's really become unuseable. I think I'm jumpin' the vegas ship.

Gonna order a copy of Edius pro 4.5

Bill,
If you're thinking of using Edius with your EX1, you need to upgrade from Pro to Broadcast. The demo you downloaded is Edius Pro. The upgrade is $409 and allows access to the broadcast codecs and formats. This is the GV upgrade site

Guys, very cool

I tried Edius 4.5 (demo) a few months back and really liked it.

A few questions please:

-What is the rendering engine - does it still go to procoder express?
-What titler did you get with Broadcast (title motion?)
-Any full screen preview (overlay) yet available? I noticed that was not available in 4.5
-If not - how do you preview from the timeline to a monitor or TV (over DVI/HDMI etc)
-Can it take advantage of all cores on a quad core box?
-Do you have a workflow established for Blu-Ray?

Cheers
Paul

Edius still seems to be in its infancy, ie, it's missing a few features, but, overall, it has a lot of potential.

1-It won't do Blu-ray, I go back to Vegas for that
2-To monitor on an HD monitor you need the hardware cards....see Edius NP, with component out
3-It doesn't take conventional plugins. It doesn't have a quality noise reduction plugin. NeatVideo won't work in Edius ;o(
4-I've read that it will use avisynth plugins, but, nowhere does it say how to do that. Documentation seems rather poor.
5-while edius has a vectorscope and wfm, I can't find a histogram.

Grass Valley/Canopus Procoder does Blue-Ray and has presets in the latest update. However, I don't know about Edius and Procoder Express.

I can highly recommend the Grass Valley Canopus forum for straight, fast, excellent answers to any question by very experienced users and Grass Valley staff:
