View Full Version : Capturing at a higher framerate

On the GL-2 the defualt framerate is 1/60 of a sec. Say I record something at 1/250 or higher. Can this be captured on my computer? I'm trying to film something with a lot of movement in it and slow it down in post. With the higher framerate it will look a lot smoother when slowed down. So, can I do this? How? Thanks.

Watchout, you can't increase or decrease the frame rate in-cam. You can up the shutter speed, which is what you're talking about. High shutter speeds make slo-mo look better, and also are what provided those cool strobey rain shots in 28 days later. But yes, upping your shutter speed would help when slowing down something down in post. However, in my experience, slowing down DV doesn't look too pretty. (at least compared to real slo-mo film that we see on geographic....go figure!) I heard somewhere around here that when slowing down DV you oughtta slow it by either 33% or 66%. Ii guess theres a ratio in there that works better with DV

"Frame rate" and "shutter speed" are two different matters. On the GL2 the frame rate is a constant 30 frames per second. Shutter speeds are what you were specifying in your post.

If you want to create a slow-motion effect you'll have to do this with your editing software or with a tool like After Effects.

The best way to get good grounding on photography/cinematography/videography principles is to get a good book or two on the subject. See our "Read About It" forum for suggestions.

We've ALL been there and we're all still there on many topics!
