Howdy,
I've only had my GL2 since Dec. 23, 2003. A couple of weeks ago when I opened the tape deck their was a sound that I have never heard before. The GL2 is relatively quite so I knew something was out of the ordinary. The noise is almost a grinding noise or something in the tape deck is experiencing some resistance. It only makes the noise when the camera is powered on and when the tape deck is open/eject/closed. Other than that there is no noise when recording or during playback. The camera still funtions the same but with the noise during the before mentioned times. I'm not sure what to do. Should I send it to Canon under warranty? Find a local shop? Or leave it as is? I'm concerned about future wear and its effects. Also, given the increase in noise, it could be a distraction since I use the GL2 mainly for wildlife. Anyone have this problem or any advice?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,
It looks like nobody had any thoughts on this. It's hard to comment because it's impossible for us to know if what you're hearing is abnormal.

My advice would be to see if you can find a local dealer that has the camera and see if it sounds similar to yours. Canon video cameras share a rather distinctive tape transport insert/eject sound so even another model would represent a reasonable comparison.

Failing that, if the camera is not malfunctioning and you have some time before an important shoot I'd be inclined to just do some casual shooting for a couple of weeks to see what happens.

thanks for the advice. I'll try it out for a while and see. I just know it's louder than it use to be.
