folks here may be interested in the news;
see thread "Canon GL1 discontinued" on the "Cameras" forum at:
www.DV.com (you go to "Community" / "Forums" and register); specifically, here:

If you don't have an account on that forum you seem to be
able to login with username guest and password guest. Handy!

There is not much news in that thread, they talk about how
the product is dis-continued and that Canon doesn't
seem to "know" about this. They also do not talk about a new
model (yet). Someone thinks the new model will be announced
at DV Expo.

Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but when is Dv-Expo?

Dan,
details are here: http://www.dvexpo.com/east/

Rob--
well by my reading, folks say the GL1 has in fact been discontinued (i.e., is no longer being shipped to dealers by the manufacturer); and the questions are simply (i) what will they call the successor camera (e.g., GL1S, GL2 ?), and (ii) when will it be officially announced (& when subsequently released).

answers to which, I wot not

David, I saw my post was wrong. I had the word *not* in there
which shouldn't have been there obviously. I removed it. Sorry
about the misunderstanding.

it's not that I wouldn't want not to not be not misunderstood . . .

um I mean, glad to see it wasn't a case of parallel universes . . .

The $250 manufacturer's rebate which expires *June 30th* should tell you everything you need to know. I thought this was old news, sorry... hope this helps,

This was in an email from a source that many here have shopped with the way it seems. I called to inquire about getting a GL1 for cheap and was too late, but this information was offered :

"We got word from out Canon Rep last week that the GL-1 Cameras are no
longer available. I have been told that the
new version or the camera should be released mid to end of July. I have
heard of some of the new improvements for the new version
and it sounds pretty impressive, the new menu set up much like the XL-1S
and an attached XLR Adapter. No prices have been listed but we are
guessing it should be about the same price as the GL-1 was when first
released, about $2400 -2300 range."

Well, all I can tell you is that the first part of that is correct, that the GL1 is getting harder and harder to find and pretty soon you won't be able to get a new GL1 at all. Expect to see more used ones on Ebay, though.

For everything else, we'll just have to wait the few more days until the rebate expires to learn any new official info.

Yeah.....trouble is everybody wants $1800 for a used camera with 1 extra bp930. When they are no longer available what will happen ? Feast or famine ?

Latest rumor from a dealer is a GL2 announcement around 25 June, to ship in mid July at a MSRP of $2700.

That sounds reasonable. No real word on features, other thtn improved image and more pro features from the menu.

Re: features, only a few more days to wait before official word.

In my opinion a used GL1 in good shape is worth $1800; it's an excellent camcorder. From what I hear, there are *no* new GL1 camcorders available... the rebate did a great job of clearing shelves.

Stay tuned,

Until last wek a new one was $1750 with a 1 year warranty though ? The funny thing that I saw was on ebay. Zotz was selling GL1's on there and they were getting more than they would if you call the store or go to their website.

The difference between last week and this week is, last week you could find a new one to buy, but now this week you can't.

So, used ones are now more expensive than new ones, because as of this week you can actually find them used, but you can't find them new.

And Ebay is Ebay... prices are always higher on Ebay. That's the nature of an auction site. It's a seller's market.

Hope this helps,

Ebay can be usefull for researching prices and finding older equipent. A few good deals can be found, but it is definitly buyer beware

Where's you buy yours from, jeffyr? I bought my last one off eBay (and had nothing but good luck with it), but I'm not sure if I want to do that again.
