Ok so a couple of questions here , I did a couple of search prior to posting but couldn't find quite the answer I am looking for , so here it goes.


1: Lcd brightness , do you guys have a steady setting or you adjust it from shooting to shooting , also would it be bad to keep it at one constant setting.

2: Planning on shooting in a nightclub , any suggestion as for the presets , set it to spotlight or manual , white balance on site (even though lighting change every seconds) or before.

I can only speak from my XL1S (which doesn't have an LCD screen),
but I left the viewfinder at constant brightness. There is no real
technical reason to do it differently, do what works for you.

I've shot a couple of times with that camera in clubs and I either
had my white balance on auto or on the indoor preset I think.

For camera settings it is best to do a bit of trial and error. If this
is a paid gig I would show up at a previous night (on your own
costs!) and run a varied amount of tests with different settings
(you can watch the settings on playback on if you set it up
correctly, check your manual).

1. I found one value of LCD brightness ok for me, and since then never changed one. BTW set it up with color bars on.

2. Tried spotlight once and didn't like it, because picture was too dark. Since then I am working in manual mode, with manual WB set up on main light (usually around 3200K) so if there is other color lights I can pick up nice "stage atmosphere". Also i like to put sharpness down about two steps. Try to experiment before, if possible.

Well since this is not a paid gig (but still wanna do my best) and a party in a nightclub last for a good 5 hours , I will have some time for experimenting

I will start shooting after midnight anyway when everybody will be less unhibited because of the few drinks they already had :)

Darko , what is the constant value because there are a few notch with which one can play when it comes to adjusting the brightness. What are the color bars you are talking about. Do you mean the color presets?

I am talking about turning on Colour Bars on my XM2 (GL2), and then setting the brightness of LCD untill I am satisfied with black and white strips on sides. There are other options for LCD too, but I am quite satisfied with this.

Well , this is still unclear to me .

First you have the custom presets which you can recall by the touch of a button

Second is the lcd brightness which doesn't affect the way the images are recorded onto the tape, That is the option I am referring to.

Obviously I wouldn't want to have the lcd too bright and misleading me on the actual lighting that is present at that time

Far better to judge exposure is use a combination of the light
meter and zebra stripes. Can't trust the LCD too much...

OK, let's try this way: Point the camera into white sheet of paper and fill frame with it. Turn on the zebra stripes (100%). Adjust exposure to value when zebra stripes dissapear. Adjust the LCD brightness. In this case you will adjust your LCD to your view of 100% brightness. Maybe this would help. Anyway, I wouldn't trust too much to LCD. Like Rob wrote, zebra is just fine.
