View Full Version : Sony HVR-Z1U + Water = What?

I just got the message from the wife of the producer I've been working for that the new Sony HD camera bought right before leaving on this last trip to Africa took a bath (completely under water) while attempting to cross a river. After opening everything they could and allowing the camera to dry they tried to power it up....nothing. So, it appears to be dead.

Are we looking at $5,000 in new equipment down the drain or can it be repaired?

Anyone have any similar experiences with "very wet" video cameras?

I (happily) haven't had such an experience, but take a look at these threads:

Thanks, Boyd. I wish just once I would remember to search the archives first!

I have little doubt this camera is salvageable. For one thing, the first chance it can be sent to a service center is the end of June when they return from this assignment.

I can tell you one thing. I've already bought two huge, heavy duty Zip-lock bags that my camera will fit into. I will not be doing any river crossings without a bit of plastic insurance. Cost me $6.00, might save me several thousand.
