Hey Quyen,

I saw the Doritos spot that won and read an interview earlier in the week from the guys that did it. They love your Letus35. I thought the footage they had blended pretty darn well with the other ads in that segment of commercials. Wow! How about that?

Yeah, Quyen congrats. It looks sweet, the bokeh and everything. A great little commercial.

Ha! I was just reading the thread posted by "Dr. Meeko" and thought I'd throw a few links of stuff I've done with the GL2 up here. Nothing major, though hopefully entertaining.. And I promise I'll listen to criticism!!! Okay, here goes:

My entry to this year's Doritos contest (done about a month ago):
YouTube - Burping Baby Commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMScCi6HrHw)

An "experimental" short I did for a class last year:
YouTube - .dertydrumb. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hD9fp5O72k)

A PSA regarding violence on television for another class (back in April '07):
YouTube - ˇTelevisión Violencia! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N03IeqM0Xhk)

I used available light for the commercial and PSA.. I think it looks okay (though not great) in the commercial, but the PSA definitely has some underexposed stuff in there. Regardless, fire away with the critiques.

Also, if you want to watch the other videos on my channel, feel free.. But the other ones were shot with one of my school's VX1000s.. Except for one of the music videos, which was shot on 16mm, and was the first thing I ever did. Oh, and the interview show, which was done in my school's TV studio.

I also have a documentary and a short film (which I actually used lights on!), both shot on the GL2, which are still in post. I can link to those when finished, if people are interested.

Okay, I'm done blabbing. Enjoy?

Hey Nick!

Hello to a fellow Detroiter!!!! Funny videos man, good job on the editing, but your right that a little bit of extra lighting would have made a good video great! Keep in touch and maybe we can work together on a couple of projects.

Thanks David!

Yeah, I'm trying my best to get better all the time.. Lightining is a huge subject that I'm trying to fathom. I appreciate your comments, and sure, I'd be down to work on something with ya someday.

Hi everybody,

Here are two commercials produced by my company, Sunspot Pictures.

The first was shot on the HPX500 and graded in Apple Color. It was produced for the Doritos super bowl contest last year.

Dorito Fingers on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/2822893)

The second was shot on the HVX200, and for obvious reasons wouldn't have gained much with the 500. We volunteered our production services to help Nesian Clothing's St. Jude Project: Can Cancer Campaign.

Nesian is donating 50% of each 'Can Cancer' T-shirt sale to fund cancer research. They are trying to raise $1,000,000 by April 2010.

As always, thanks for watching!

Ads looks good, clean, great acting, excellent DOF - didn't know the HPX500 had that much DOF. Very curious what camera you used for the Donut Shop Hero trailer?

Nick Harris
May 14th, 2009, 10:19 PM
Thanks Nicholas, that DOF comes from a Fuji cine zoom that retains a T 2.0 throughout the entire focal range. It could be even better with good digi primes

Donut Shop Hero was shot on the HVX200/Redrock+Nikons combo. We did do a pickup day on the 500 almost a year after principle photography, although none of that is in the trailer. It was so painful to have to "dumb down" the footage from the 500 to match!

I liked it. Editing should have been a bit tighter IMO. Good job though.

Thank you!

We have 25 clips in 30 seconds:) I almost thought it went too fast:)

Good job Erik!

I think Jeff has a point. While the editing is fast-paced, there's something about the rhythm that does feel off. In some instances you have extraneous shots, such as the doctor leaning in after "starting at 280" that was obviously inserted to avoid a jump cut; it could have cut instead to the paddles approaching the chest with the voiceover "clear" just before the shock which would have tightened that section and achieved just as much. The performances were a little on the slow side also, in many cases they could have been paced up. This sort of thing can be hard to "feel" on set but it never hurts to get an alternate take with more energy or speed.

Also, the music track is on the low side--more dynamics in the mix, especially when there is no dialogue, would have helped keep it moving along and feel more cohesive.

Otherwise, it's a nice concept and a good entry for that contest.

Here are my two entrees for the annual Doritos Super Bowl commercial contest. Both shot with the XH A1s, edited in Adobe Premiere Pro and effects added with Adobe After Effects.
Enjoy!

I like the Special Powers one better than The Duplicator - but both are good.

Special Powers is much more professional looking and sounding. Well done.

This was very much a last minute deal. I’m not satisfied with it, but at least I got something in. Being the guy in front and behind the camera made it a little difficult. :-P I’m fairly happy with what I got considering the circumstances though.

YouTube - Doritos Commercial - Good with Every Meal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPBF9PKe820)

If you like it, please view and comment on the contest page at Doritos Presents: CRASH THE SUPER BOWL (http://j.mp/everymeal) The intro is VERY loud and obnoxious, be sure to skip that.

With DP1 and Canon 5D MKII in hand, SmallHD worked with two local teams to produce two of the final six Doritos Super Bowl Ads.

The three ads with the most votes will be shown on the Super Bowl with a chance to win more that $1M

We would really appreciate your support

Let's hear it! Which ones did you all like? I haven't watched all of them, but "Parisian Love" (Google) caught my eye with its use of music and a simple text box to tell the story.

Of course "Underdog" (Doritos) was shot on a 5D, so I have to give it props.

The two Super Bowl commercials which my wife and I liked best were Dove Life's "You Are A Man" (http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/2010/dove-youre-a-man/) and Google's "Parisian Love" (http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/2010/google-parisian-love/) -- however we really did not at all dig the "men not wearing pants" theme that so many other advertisers went for. At a broadcast cost of $80K per second, we thought that most of those ads would have been as classy as the ones linked above. The E-Trades were as cute as we expected, though.

The Kia "Joyride" commercial still makes me smile every time I see it. Very classy, very funny.

The Dodge commercial hit home for some reason also.. though it would not be my choice of car. :)

Overall I thought it was a down year but for me the clear standout was the understated and classy Google ad, especially when juxtaposed with the sophomoric and ham handed attempts at comedy in many of the other spots.

A buddy and I shot a Pepsi Max commercial for the "Crash the Super Bowl" contest and its trending at the number one spot with the most views. Please take a look and see what you think.

We shot on my 7D with a 70-200 4.0L lens, and his T2i with I believe the kit lens. Had to go with 2 cameras since most of the shots we only got one take. We over-cranked to 60fps for most of the shoot but we got some nice images. Not a lot of color correction done in post, we tried to do as much as we could in camera.

Doritos® and Pepsi MAX® Present: CRASH THE SUPER BOWL (http://www.crashthesuperbowl.com/#/gallery/?video=608)

It should start right after the Pepsi intro. It's titled 'Pepsi Cowboy'.
Sorry I don't have a private link but that's not allowed in the contest rules.
Thanks for looking.

This weekend I was supposed to be working on a gig, but it got cancelled. Then I saw there was under 72 hours left til the deadline on Doritos superbowl commercial contest. I sat there for 5 minutes and decided I would see what I could produce in that time frame. From concept to completion this is what I put together in under 48 hours!!!

All shots except for the single wide shot were on F3, wide was on AF100
