Do you think the Gitzo GT1542T with a Manfrotto 701HDV head on top will be enough for a Canon XH-1A for overseas travel in remote areas? It doesn't have to be perfect, but I need as light a setup as possible. (Fortunately, wind will not be an issue so stability in windy conditions should be a concern.)

I'm heading to the rainforest region in Peru in 2½ weeks (last minute trip) and I'm looking for a lightweight tripod to fit this camera and head. If anyone has any other tripod suggestions, please let me know. I have a little budget available to purchase needed equipment and I definitely need an appropriate tripod.

I'm hoping to be able to get all my gear in a carry-on backpack (Cinebags CB-23) and clothes in a piece of carry-on luggage. The tripod should be small enough to fit in a 22" carry-on.

Thanks!

How did you go with this Phil?

I'm keen to get a smaller tripod for travel with the BMPCC, thinking of putting a Manfrotto video head on my 190XPROB legs and throwing that in my checked bag, because of course the BMPCC can fit in my carry on, or getting some kind of small carbon tripod.

I have a 701HDV and have just bought the new 500. It does not have as many controls as the 501 and 701, but it is a lot lighter.

I definitely recommend the Gitzo 1542T with a Manfrotto head - I got the new 500AH, which is somewhat bigger than the 701HDV but is really nice for balancing large cameras. This combo, along with an Acratech leveling base, is what I use with my C100 for everything, not just for remote traveling. It's awesome, very lightweight, great fluid shots, quick to setup and adjust, and is dependable in lots of conditions, even up here in Alaska.

I did a longer review of this tripod and a one-backpack documentary rig on my tiny blog - Complete Documentary Filmmaking Kit in One Backpack | Alaska Video Shooter (http://alaskavideoshooter.com/complete-documentary-filmmaking-kit-in-one-backpack/)
