I was thinking of getting a monitor for my jvc hm600. The primary use, deposition where on rare occasions I need to sit on the opposite side of the camera's flip out screen. The other use would be for theater work. Both applications I will be using ac power and mounting it to the tripod. I'll be monitoring the framing and exposure. I set my white balance and focus manually before filming so these aspects aren't essential.

Two 7" 1280 x 800 monitors I have in mind are ikan vk7i and lillput in the $300-400 range. Any thoughts?
I was also curious how theses monitors handle different resolutions. My legal work is Standard def 4x3 while my other work is hd 1440i

You might want to look at Neway monitor:. NEWAY Industrial Limited_HDMI Monitors (http://www.newayhd.com/)
They are the company that makes Ikan monitors since Ikan is just a re-brander and then they grossly inflate the price. I just bought a Neway 7" 3G SDI 1280x800 monitor for half the price of the same Ikan branded one. They also make an HDMI version for under $400. with all the features including waveform and one fewer features for under $300.
This IPS monitor is excellent value and very well made of metal with case and sunhood and two battery plates as well as offering a V mount or AB plate for another $25.
I bought from a seller on ebay who ships via DHL or at least to Canada which cost $75 but the monitor was here in less than a week.
Here is one just enter this number in the search field on ebay .

Hope this is of some help.
