View Full Version : Stills resolution 16:9?

Anyone know of a way of setting the pixel aspect ratio to 16:9? For some reason I cannot understand mine are all 4:3. I think that's the native ratio of the sensor and can be fixed but would be easier to have the originals in the correct ratio for my video.

Hi Pete,

I think there's some info missing from the post - what kind of camera? Do you want it to take 16:9 stills? 16:9 is the aspect ratio of the image, not the pixels.

Please elaborate on the intended workflow

Thanks

Sorry Jeff it's the Hero 3 black and for still images I get only 4:3 ratio - I'm using it for timelapse that ends up in a video, and can fix it afterwords but it would remove one more step if it captured a 16:9 image in the first place.

Hi Pete,

Surprisingly, the user manual does not list the actual dimensions of stills, only referring to the 4 possible modes as 5MP Wide, 7MP medium, 7MP wide or 12MP wide (default) on page 24 - http://cbcdn2.gp-static.com/uploads/product_manual/file/50/HERO3_UM_Black_ENG_REVD_WEB.pdf

There is the option to capture stills while capturing video, and then it does appear to mirror the video frame size, such as 1080p or 720p to get 16:9 but that is not going to help you with time-lapse recordings.

Have you tried all the 4 different still capture modes to compare resulting frame sizes?

I have a Hero 3 Silver but haven't tried stills with it myself. Since 16:9 is a video frame size and not a standard PRINT size, I would not expect that it does 16:9 in STILL mode. I'll experiment with my camera when I have a chance.

Thanks
