I am getting ready to start editing a documentary I shot with an FX1. All the footage is 1080. I want to downcovert the 1080 to 480 with the FX1 and then capture with final cut pro.
Has anybody done this? Should the settings be DV widescreen or just 4:3 Dv becuase the FX1 has already downconverted the footage?

Just set i.Link downconvert in the menus. Then you can treat the FX1 as though it's a regular DV camera. Assuming you want widescreen (anamorphic) DV, also be certain that "squeeze" mode is selected in the menus. You can then capture using the anamorphic DV preset in FCP. Actually it doesn't matter how you capture; you can check the anamorphic column in the clip's properties using the FCP browser after you've captured.

thanks boyd
this "squeeze" mode is in the FX1's menu?
and on the FX1's output menu there is an option for TV type: 16:9 or 4:3?

Oops, sorry. I think it's called squeeze on the Z1, but my camera isn't here with me now....

TV type 16:9 gets you anamorphic, widescreen, video. Use the widescreen setup for this.

TV type 4:3 gets you letterboxed 4:3 video. Use the normal setup for this.
