Have not been here for a long time (long story) but have a question. I have a dash cam that produces .AVI clips. My Vegas will not recognize the clips. I know avi,s can come in different forms but dont know what form this is. Camera documentation of no help. Manufacturer is out of business and web site is closed down. Can anyone give me a hand? I have Vegas 13.

If you can't get it to work, I would try WinFF or Handbrake (both free programs) and convert to something else. Seems weird that it doesn't work though.

Not so unusual. There are a lot of different codecs in use in dash cams.

An install of HandBrake includes the versatile FFMPEG decoder codec package, that’s pretty solid. A good first step. But still not guaranteed.

If that doesn’t work, google for the *free* version of MediaInfo. It’s easy to get distracted by the clickbait, so take your time when selecting the download. Then, select one of the advanced modes, and drop your file on it. It will tell you what codec is in your AVI, which will lead to a little research project as to how you can decode it.

AVOID codec packs, generally. They tend to break some things that might be working, like your favorite export presets.

Virtual Dub (free) converts .avi files compiled from JPEG frames into "regular .avi for Sony Vegas.
Worked for me on files from a small time lapse camera in Vegas 13.
