HI
Has anyone done any tests comparing the quality of the analog conversion on the ADS api 555 vs the canopus 110 or any of the other standalone converter boxes. Any comments on other than convenience, the quality difference vs simply using the analog in to dv out on a camcorder?

Thanks
Sharyn

Douglas Spotted Eagle did some testing with several analog-DV adaptors a few years ago, results here http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/articles/ADSlink.htm

On the basis of this I bought a Canopus ADVC100, which I've been very happy with. I understand that the 110 is the same codec. Not familiar with the latest ADS products.

Canopus also has the ADVC300, which includes a timebase corrector, handy if you're transferring old VHS that might have been poorly recorded.

Thanks Seth, Interesting link. DSE does the usual good job.
This then leads to the next question. The SONY digital 8 line have a built in TBC, Do you or anyone else know if the TBC function is in the data path with analog in to dv out, or is it only in the path from the hi 8 tape?

No idea about whether you'd get TBC using Dig 8 as a pass-through device. If you could find a repair tech with a service manual it would probably be pretty easy to determine...
