I have the Tascam FW-1082 and it can play, shuttle...basically control the actions in FCP...as well as adjust the timeline audio.

Ray,

I also have the Tascam FW-1082 and like it a lot. I use it more with Soundtrack Pro than with Final Cut; I also use it for multi-channel audio recording (the FW-1082 is both a control surface and a FireWire mixer). The touch-sensitive, motorized faders are very helpful for complex audio mixing.

All in all, I consider it a very good value for the money.

I find it difficult to edit without the ShuttlePro. And I find it sooooo easy to edit with it.

It also helps in other programs, but it works really well with FCP.

Contour Shuttle and Shuttle Pro here. Its just alot more intuitive than IOJKL.

The Tascam FW 1802 looks interesting because it also functions as multi channel audio input. I've not tried it yet. Maybe for a future setup. I'm using an Alesis USB mixer to route audio at the moment.
