I was burning data dvds prepping for a clean install. Long story short, I also added stuff from another drive and now my MB Pro's HD says 1.77 gb available. Down from about 40, I think. And this was after emptying trash.

What gives?

The Finder's "Calculate all sizes" is your friend. Start with the root of your hard drive in list view and let the Finder calculate the folder sizes. My guess is you're going to find a temporary folder somewhere that's full of some stuff.

But be careful.

Thanks for the info!

I tried control+i to give the sizes of each: library, system, users, applications, etc and it added up to what I figured but still it says 1.77gb available.

Is what you say different from what I did (apple+i)? Where is that 'calculate all sizes'? And do it the way I did, or different?

bit of a dumbo,

I used the whatsize app to estimate the size of files. What's odd is it's still not showing something. ~38gb.

The folders (app, lib-users, private, sys et al) add up to 63.1 gb.

But beside the drive on the left it says Capacity 111 gb, Used 109 gb, Available 1.67 gb.

Hmm.

And what is in the private (2 gb to sleepimage)? Got no idea.

thanks,
