what is the future of media storage?

I'm just wondering, what is the future of media storage?

I mean, at first we have VHS tapes, then VCDs, SVCDs, and now DVDs.

There is belief that CDs will gradually fade out and all replaced by DVDs.

So what's the next medium after DVD? What's the "Next Big Thing" in media storage?

Will we still be using DVDs 20 years from now?

Any thoughts and comments?

The reason why I ask is because, a lot of people are transfering their old video footage from VHS to DVDs. But how long can the DVD medium last? Five years? Ten years? What's the medium that's gonna replace DVDs?

my crystal ball sez dvd's will disappear & be replaced by one or another form of a portable home storage unit with many terrabytes of storage. A digital fridge, if you will.

This will be complimented by the evolution towards a world where everyone is 'wired up the ass' - to use a phrase i heard here on the forum describing the advanced broadband situation of some small and politically insignificant northern european countries. :-) thus making local storage less than necessary - because a digital 7 11 is always open, a mouseclick away.

Here in norway the fastest growing electronic segment centers around wireless connnection gadgets to link the pc to the living room home cinema / sound system, i.e. streaming everything off the net right into speakers or onto tv.

This is awesome news for us humble dv pioneers, because what is the single, great pressing need in this world i describe....?

I TOTALLY agree with you, man.

CONTENT is KING!! (in terms of web design)

You can argue about design, you can argue about style,
but let me put it this way, pretty eye-candy design is what attracts you; content, especially quality content, is what keeps you attracted.

It's like The Matrix Reloaded movie. A lot of pretty graphics. A lot of eye-candy special effects, but crappy storyline. Nobody wants to see it.

A lot of people I know said it sucked.

Halogram

I read or saw on tech TV something about Halographic (sp) disks. I remember it being talked about as a "when" not a "if". I forgot which company is making, but the disk will not spin so the drive won't wear out and it will hold about way more than a DVD.

NOW the succesor is dual layered DVD, blu-ray and HD-DVD (so
it seems).

In the not too distant future I'm suspecting holographic cristals
will be the way to go or some bioligical system.
