I hear that the extra footage includes 20 minutes of the Steadicam operator accidentaly shooting his feet.

Oh yuk yuk!

Other than the fact that the film loads for 35mm Steadicam only run 4 minutes, Mr. Couper...!

Well, actually, now that you mention it, I had to deliberately shoot my own feet on this setup. It didn't end up in the final cut of "Office Space" but it was a point-of-view shot of the main character, Peter, watching TV in bed, with my feet standing in for his (under the covers).

We should have put a smoldering cigarette in the lens port, and a garter belt over the magazine.

Charles, "Office Space" has become quite the "cult classic". Luckily, I don't work in a cubicle...some friends do though. They love this film.

I guess this is why they use DV in porn. There's no way you could maneuver around a rig like that...

Man Charles, it's so nice to actually know someone who had something to do with the production of one of my favorite movies. At the time the film came out, I was actually working at a financial software company. It was so real it was almost a reality show for us.

One of my favorite scenes was the slo-mo disk handoff with the gangsta music playing as they load the virus into the system. Was that you shooting at that point? Just curious...

I operated most of the film, except for a few scenes. We split up to do some multiple units and the DP covered the operating on his end. I shot a fair amount of inserts including several that appear in the scene you mention (screen shots, hands on mice etc.) I actually spent quite a while getting a shot of the floppy disk being inserted into the drive from the inside of the computer (!), an interesting lighting challenge to be sure--it didn't make the movie, unfortunately!

I was sent to Houston to DP second unit which included the first few shots in the movie (traffic jam on the freeway) and some other pickups. One of my favorites is when Peter slides the envelope of money under the door and then changes his mind and tries to fish it out. To get the shot in which you see him trying to peer through the bottom of the doorjamb, a special set was built a few feet off the ground where the floor dropped off in the foreground, so we could position the camera at floor height. It was an interesting challenge for me to light his face which was jammed up against the door as well as the floor, without overlighting the carpet!

The other "gangsta" scene that is a big crowd-pleaser is the destruction of the printer. We shot that very early in the production, and I recall that while Mike (Judge) knew he wanted to shoot with the Steadicam in low-mode, I came up with the idea to dutch the camera to make it a bit more like the rap videos of the era. Most of the down angles onto the computer I ended up shooting on second unit, at a different time and location (eagle eyes may notice that the terrain doesn't quite match).

I didn't know you worked on Office Space... that was my first film experience as an editing assistant under David Rennie. I must have watched your footage 8 billion times. I'm pretty sure I saw all of the bloopers and I don't recall the steadycam foot shot discussed. Anyway, I enjoy your posts around here... great information, thanks!

6 years later I can still remember how hard it was to not ruin shots by shaking the camera as I nearly wept with laughter. The "two Bobs" scenes in the conference room, many moments with the three guys talking, and of course those three completely unexpected takes of Drew talking about the girl he was going to take to the party...outside of the "O" face and the "Drew roller coaster" clip that appears in the credits, I remember "riding the Drew pony--giddyap!

Looking forward to seeing the presumed gag reel on the DVD!

I was lucky enough to have the red-haired secretary (Kinna McInroe) in my first feature. Great actress, hilarious. We're good friends.
