PlayStation 3 launch date in question

Sony's Stringer has maintained that the PS3 would contain a Blu-Ray player. Yet at CES, electronics powerhouses Samsung and Pioneer announced Blu-Ray players that would cost $1,000 and $1,800, respectively.

Those costs won't fly among video game buyers, especially with the Xbox 360 going for as little as $300 for a scaled-down version. Most analysts expect the PS3 unit to be priced at $400: a loss-leader for Sony

It needs to come out like. . .soon.

Here's the thing, see. I know the Xbox 360 is supposed to be plagued with problems, and maybe the PS3 is better, but you don't know how much I loved "Morrowind" for the original Xbox. Its sequel is on the 360, and that right there makes me want to own it. So I gots to know if waitin' for the PS3 is worth it. I know, I know, I should ignore video games completely, but let's be real here.

They should bring back the firewire port on the PS3, then it could be a crude NLE! (and there is no USB 2.0 to Firewire (400) cable in existance)

I like how almost all financial advisors have pegged the PS2 at about $499, and then market watch goes and says $399 or so lol.

the PS3 will likely cost consumers more than the Xbox 360, which retails for $400. Even at a pricey $500, Sony will be taking a loss on each machine, just as it did with each earlier PlayStation model. The company will hope to make money selling software for the console down the line--the same strategy Microsoft and Nintendo have taken. But Sony's use of the Blu-Ray disc drive means even more is at stake for the company

sorry for the bump.

Well, the big sony ps meeting is about to start. What do you guys predict would be the big news there?

Josh Bass February 17th, 2006 01:57 AM

The PS won't do REAL 24p, but will instead do a "cineframe 24".

Jack Zhang February 17th, 2006 08:20 PM

PS: Playstation, not the FX2/Z2 or whatever.

I perdict final specs will be announced and an updated developer's list will be released.

Boyd Ostroff February 17th, 2006 08:38 PM

Um, I think that went over your head Jack.... but I thought it was funny! :-)

PlayStation 3 delay? Don't panic!

The frenzy started late Friday, when word of an analyst report from Merrill Lynch began to circulate. The key phrase, setting off hysterics in the gaming press – and the mass media – was the PlayStation 3 "could be delayed by between 6 and 12 months, with the result being an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the U.S."
