Ninja Star media

I'd like to buy a Ninja Star but the media cost is staggering - even with Atomos' own "cheap" cards at $160 for a 64GB card. 422 ProRes 1080p at 23.976 = about 1 hour 10 minutes

Has any enterprising nutcase worked out how to attach a hard drive to this thing?

Hugs, Harry.

Of course you realize one of us "old guys" would need to chime in and remind you of the early days of Panasonic P2 and Sony SxS media...

Media always drops in price over time and early adopters need to make the decision whether or not they NEED that solution and should seriously consider ALL aspects of a technology purchase, including media, and not just the price to get the hardware.

When I purchased my four BMD HyperDeck Studios, I purchased 8 x 240GB SSDs at the same time with each drive costing over $400. But I DID need the solution for my application for I spent the money gladly as it was still cheaper than any other solution that would have worked at the time.

Yup. As an "old guy" myself, I am aware that this stuff drops in price by the second. But my question still stands - has any bright spark worked out how to use this with a hard drive?

Best, Harry.

I guess you have to get the Ninja 2, cost a bit more but you at least can use harddrives.

Did you not know the Ninja/Ninja Blade existed?

Ermmm ... Are you talking to me? If so, yes. I know the Ninja Blade exists.

Harry.

I'm curious why you would want to hack a hard drive to run off the Ninja Star, which would require a way to power it and a SATA -> C-Fast converter cable, which wouldn't be cheap, instead of just buying a Ninja-2 that already has all that.

You have answered my question. Now I know why nobody has done this. I had no idea it would be so expensive. Many thanks,

Harry.

You might have more luck using a CFast to SD converter then running high performance SDHC cards but last time I looked, this did not seem to be a cost effective solution even if it worked, without frame dropping, etc.

I really don't have problem with the current high cost of this media as the 'Star' is a very small, lightweight solution which allows me to record direct to 10bit ProRes. For much of my broadcast film & television career, I used emulsion film which was always expensive. An expensive acquisition medium concentrates the mind so you benefit from forethought & planning and that can result in minimum post time wasted.
