How'to downscale AVCHD to SD 4:3
 

HI Guy, Have anyone know how can i downscale the AVCHD format to SD 4:3 format( Same Clients still require SD format) , i using Edius Neo editing & Panasonic HMC 72 (PAL) with HD Writer.

Hi Andrew

Get the Transcoding software from the Panny website. It has an option to transcode the files from the HMC72 card directly to AVI 4:3 (of course it's going to crop the sides of the image!!) When you shoot, turn on the 4:3 crop square on the EVF so you know what will not be filmed!!!

Isn't Edius format agnostic? Couldn't you just drop the HD clip in a SD 4:3 timeline? Either crop automatically(if you shot accordingly), or do some pan and scan on each clip to optimize the display for 4:3

Nice to see you here again!!

I have done DVD's for my wedding clients with Sony Vegas using the MTS files direct to SD and also have transcoded directly to AVI. With each DVD on a brand new 33" LCD TV no one will be able to tell the difference unless you look pretty hard!!!

It's actually better to use the transcoder and edit with 4:3 AVI's as it will sort out all the nasties like the AVCHD footage having it's interlacing upper field first and the AVI will, of course be lower field first. Just be very careful about cropping or zooming interlaced footage in any editor!! It plays havoc with the interlacing!! If you have to use AVCHD in the editor then make sure that the footage is de-interlaced BEFORE you crop or zoom!!!
