Re: Basic AVCHD on Mac - Help Please!!

Bob, if you have the up to date version of either Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express or the free iMovie you can ingest the .mts files direct into your Mac without any extra app or plug-in. FCP will transcode the heavily compressed .mts. files into a variety of Apple's ProRes codec or Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) all in the Quicktime format. FCX and iMovie will only transcode to AIC. Once your raw .mts footage becomes one of the above, it's easy to edit on even a modest machine. My 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo Mac Mini edits them well up to about ProRes 422HQ which I believe is already overkill for 24Mbps AVCHD files from your NX5U.

Use the Log and Transfer window to do the ingest in case of FCP or FCX. In iMovie, just plug the camera in and it will tell you to do the rest.

Re: Basic AVCHD on Mac - Help Please!!

I just bought an AVCHD 1080/60p camcorder and I have a Mac Pro.

I will soon be doing editing on my Mac. After reading this thread I see what the editing options are.

I am interested in Adobe Premiere Elements 9 however most of the reviews and comments I have read about using it on a Mac are not good.

Does anyone have any personal experience using it on a Mac and what are your opinions of it ?

Thanks.

Does the Elgato speed up the time in loading the video from the camera to the mac or just when sharing.
I shot my daughters graduation, she was valadictorian. To load the evening onto iMovie is 1:24 hrs. In the words of The Who "Lord, theres got to be a better way"

Cheers, Dino

I'm a Mac user too, 2008 Mac Pro and soon to be owner of the HS900

I found this piece of software for $49:00 that may help with importing issues?

http://www.aunsoft.com/final-mate-mac/

Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac camcorder software for Mac helps convert AVCHD to Apple ProRes & AIC, Join/Split AVCHD without re-encoding

Regards

Barry

Hello Bary,
If Final Mate converts AVCHD to ProRes or another codec it means that it converts the video (with a possible loss of quality).
Clipwrap doesn't change the codec, only the conteiner.
