Renaming AVCHD files in FCP

A client gave footage filmed in AVCHD on SD card. While I was able to import the video using Log and Transfer in Final Cut Pro, I changed the names of the files that were imported to be more meaningful than Clip #42 and then it no longer could see the files. I changed the names back but it still wouldn't recognize them. I tried to reimport and/or Log and transfer the files that were imported on my hard drive but it gave me an error about the file structure. Luckily I still had the clients card, but I still had reimport all the files again.

So is this a qwerk of FCP or are all AVCHD files behave this way? I inadvertently imported to my system drive, I'd like to move them to the hard drive my project is in but I'm afraid it will break the link and I'll be forced to reimport. Any suggestions on how one manages AVCHD files and why do they behave like this?

This is how FCP works. Other editing systems can read AVCHD files that have been renamed.

thx eric. FCP can be so annoying. anyways I discovered files can be moved, just not renamed. so i was able to organize the clips into appropriate named folders.
