Source Media of Different Resolutions and Pixel Sizes

I'm putting together an actor's reel. The source media files are from DVD and Quicktime. Their resolutions vary: 720 X 480 and 960 X 720. Some files have anamorphic pixels while others have square pixels.

The differences in resolution and pixel size are driving me batty. The anamorphic pixel material displays properly in the Source Monitor when "Display 16:9" is selected. But the sqaure pixel material is stretched too wide. If I turn off "Display 16:9", then anamorphic stuff looks way too thin.

I know I can use an effect to resize segments in a sequence, but I'd like the clips to show in their proper aspect ratio in the Source Monitor. Is there a way to do that?

Should I use a program like TMPGEnc Xpress 4.0 to convert to a "standard" size?

Are there some import settings in Avid that can help in this regard?

The project format is DNxHD 175x 1080p 23.976.

THANKS MUCH.

You don't really need any extra software. You have two options.

If your sequence is 16x9 anamorphic then you can place your 4x3 material in there with a pillarbox. If you don't want the pillarbox then you can scale up the 4x3 until it gets pushed out of the screen.

If your sequence is 4x3 then you can extract a 4x3 picture from the center of the 16x9 footage by scaling the clips up.
