Current films I'm into

Just thought I'd mention a couple of films that have really interested or impressed me recently.

I watched "Requiem" last night and thought it was very VERY well made. It had a very understated feel to it, and actually told a realistic story as opposed to the Hollywood version "The exorcism of Emily Rose" which was a good movie, but very Hollywooded.#

Also I watched "Oldboy" by Chan-Wook Park and was completely blown away. The film is visually stunning with fantastic acting from the whole cast. It's a little over the top at times and you do have to suspend reality but overall the film was genuinely stunning.

I also watched the begining of "Van Helsing" last night before bed. What utter gibberish that film is!

Anyone seen anything worth raving about recently?

"Anyone seen anything worth raving about recently?"

No, I'm waiting for a good scifi movie, and one that doesn't have comic book heroes in it.

If you dig Old Boy then you definitely have to check out the others in the trilogy of revenge films from Chan-Wook Park. They go in sequence of:

1. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310775/
2. Old Boy
3. Lady Vengeance (aka Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) <--- My absolute favorite of the three. - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451094/

Which is why I just bought "Silent Running" for fiver off play.com!

I'm still waiting for a damn good horror movie that doesn't involve vampires + werewolves or some gimp with a knife killing beautiful teenagers.

What happened to true horror?

I just watched "Silent Running" on Comcast On Demand. I hadn't seen it since I was about 11 years old. It's dated, but still has a great message and still has a great emotional core.

I also just saw "30 Days of Night" and loved it. I'm really glad to see scary vampires again. Enough of the goth/emo vampires.

hmm, what else. Oh, I saw "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" again after probably 12 years and thought it was excellent. I don't know why people don't like that movie.
If you haven't seen "The Host" I'd recommend that, and also his other movie "Memories of Murder". "Memories of Murder" is similar to Fincher's "Zodiac" in that they are both about real life killers and the people who are trying to catch them. I though "Zodiac" was excellent, but "Memories" is even better, by far.

I enjoyed Zodiac as well. Haven't seen Memories of Murder but I will seek it, thanks for the heads up

For me, the best movie denoting real life murders was In Cold Blood, hands down. I have not seen the movie in years but I can still vividly recall many scenes from it. The stark black and white photography was stunning

And the low key, realistic way events wound out was truly chilling. Great performances, especially Robert Blake as Perry. For a guy who made his career being over the top, I love the way he does as much with silence as he does with the dialogue. Seeing Capote (terrific in its own right) brought In Cold Blood back to me

In another thread someone was lamenting the lack of "real" horror movies. Rent In Cold Blood. Still, the scariest movie I've ever seen

Just watched Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

WOW. That was absolutely fantastic. I'm really torn between which I prefer, "OldBoy" or "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance".

I really am blown away by Chan-Wook Park. For some reason he reminds me of a Korean version of Guillermo Del Torro.

Absolutely excellent, thanks for the tip Travis.

Just waiting to get my grubby mitts on "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" now.

I also watched "10 Rillington Place" Very good movie! Highly recommended for all the true crime lovers out there.

Then like me, Sean, you're a bit of an unique movie goer. I also saw "Silent Running" when I was a kid. Bought the DVD a while back, and checked out the bonus features. Turns out "Silent Running" was one of 10 films put out by the studio as "low budget experiments" and was a very limited release in theaters, so not a lot of people got to see the movie on the big screen. Now, do you know the story of how they made those robots move? It's inspiring...
