Goodbye, Paul Newman

Passed away at 83 years of age.
Acting legend Paul Newman dies - Movies - MSNBC.com

Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid and The Sting are two of my all-time favorite films--mainly because of Paul Newman. He was dashing, mischievous, a heart-stealer--I loved watching him on the screen. Of course, I smile every time I walk down an aisle at the grocery store and see his face smiling at me from a jar of sauce, too.

For me there was no better pairing EVER than Paul Newman and Robert Redford. I’ll always wish they’d done just one more film together.

Edit: Oops, we posted at almost the same time, Pete. Would you merge this for me, please? :)

Wow, that makes me sadder than I might have imagined. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was one of the movies that made me want to make movies.

Butch Cassidy: Then you jump first.
Sundance Kid: No, I said.
Butch Cassidy: What's the matter with you?
Sundance Kid: I can't swim.
Butch Cassidy: Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you.

Recently, one of his best was Nobody's Fool. Really a great movie, in my opinion.

Not to be confused with the Roseanna Arquette film of the same name, I was going to say the same thing, a really great film. There's a discussion thread going on somewhere where you list films that you can watch over and over. This is one of those films. I've watched it at least a dozen times and I never get tired of it. Newman achieves perfect pitch with his character and makes everyone around him look good.

My wife's all-time favorite actor (and one of my favorites as well). I'll regret having to tell her about this when she returns home later this afternoon. A sad day, he was one of the very best. My favorites among all his work would have to be first and foremost Hud, followed by Cool Hand Luke, Exodus, The Verdict... and so many others. An inimitable super star, without question.

His legacy I'll always respect him for were his many charitable acts, gifts and foundations. I'll remember his devotion to wife and family, his passion for motorsports. His movies are timeless.

Just remembered his wonderful performance in Long Hot Summer, sharing screen time with his wife Joanne Woodward and the legendary Orson Welles. It's going to be tough to see these films for awhile; they just won't seem quite the same.

Torn Curtain was on TCM just yesterday... I imagine TCM will devote an extensive programming block to honor his legacy very soon.

I'll never forget the thrill of meeting him on a cruise, along with his wife and two daughters. I actually sneaked into the onboard casino to play blackjack alongside the master himself. I lost out on the cards but lived to tell that story! A great actor and philanthropist too! Sorry to seem him go.
