Doom!

Anybody see the trailer for this yet? I thought they shelved it a long time ago. Last I heard Tom Berringer was going to be the main character.

I believe the lead role went to The Rock.

Dimitri De Keukelaere August 22nd, 2005 10:45 AM

no the lead is played by Karl Urban(the eastern european hitman from the bourne supremacy) the rock plays "sarge" , a supporting actor

and for the film I guess to be a movie based on a game It's rather a fully packed action-horror flick without much of a "story". That doesn't say it's a bad movie. But when i saw the trailer aliens did ring a bell and so for originality Its not so groundbreaking but for the action I don't know yet. have to see it

The action-science fiction flicks of these days are so much loud mtv-cut, almost 'videoclips'.
If I have to choose, I'd rather have that old creepy atmosphere of Alien.
The new filmmakers should watch at them, to see how a proper movie is made instead of a loud videoclip with much shooting, without real tension.
(I know I'm generalizing if I say 'the new filmmakers, I just meant makers of movies like this one, and the Resident Evil-movies and Alien Vs. Predator)

And as Dimitri says, you can't call it really original too.
But even if it isn't, if you are a good filmmaker, you still can get a good movie out of it, if you know how to create real tension.

it's the thing in hollywood. If a thing works there gonna use it and abuse it over and over. Im just rather prospecting. So if you're already using the old story then I can pretty much say "it's been done" and "seen that already". but as I said movies like this doesn't have to rely on stories that much but more on their "action" and their creepy environment

they will be using a "first person perspective" camera shot like in the game itself. the problem is... this is a FILM and it is NOT interactive. so it's just as exciting as watching a recorded tournament of doom or quake3 gameplay. i think it's stupid.

therefore, the whole film will bomb. at one point, id software said they were gonna expire the rights to make the movie if no one picks it up forcing the movie studio's hands. the problem, of course, is doom3 comes out, made lots of $ and the studios see $, so they commission the film. now, we already know it's going to lack plot, characterization because the game itself DO NOT have these elements to begin with. so what're we left with? a generic SF horror action flick. that's all? i think it'll suck big time.

goes to show you even id just wants to make $ and don't care about their own property. i think half-life would make a far, richer universe if done properly. doom is a terrible idea for a movie to begin with unless someone redo the entire premise fit for a film.
